London Stansted Airport, which is part of the Manchester Airport Group, has added a new Scania/Schmidt combination sweeper to its airside sweeping and scrubbing fleet.  Based on a 250 horsepower Scania P 250 DB4x2HNZ chassis and fitted with Schmidt ASC 990 sweeping and scrubbing equipment, the truck now joins nine other Scania-based vehicles – four jet sweeper tractor units, three runway de-icers, one sweeper and one scrubbing truck – currently in service at London Stansted.

“London Stansted took delivery of its first Scania vehicle back in the year 2000, and today we value the marque for its reliability and dependability,” says Airside Operations Duty Manager, Giles Peeters.  “Essentially, our Scania trucks help us do our job – which is to keep the airport operational – by being operator-friendly vehicles which are always ready for service.  Their reliability has proved to be exceptional over the years, and their ease of use together with the commonality of controls between the various models types in the fleet make them a popular choice with our operators.  The addition of the new Scania P 250 rigid with its Schmidt ASC 990 combination sweeper equipment will further enhance our ability to provide the best possible service to the airlines and travelling public using the airport.”

With a throughput of 25 million passengers a year and approximately 600 aircraft movements a day, London Stansted is the UK’s fourth busiest international airport after Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester.  In addition to keeping the runway serviceable, the Airside Operations sweeper fleet is responsible for cleansing the airport’s four taxiways, six aircraft parking cul-de-sacs and the apron surrounding the stands.  The highly efficient Schmidt ASC 990 combination equipment fitted to the airport’s latest Scania truck is the 300th example of its type.
