BOC , the UK and Ireland’s biggest industrial gases business has now added BioLNG to its growing HGV offer. BioLNG is a sustainable version of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) produced by the anaerobic digestion of organic waste.

BOC has supplied the HGV sector with LNG for a number of years. By moving to BioLNG, the CO2 savings of up to 20% created by LNG can be boosted to as much as 95%. And it offers considerable cost savings compared to diesel.

Unlocking such savings will bring a significant benefit to HGV operators currently challenged by the Government to reduce their CO2 emissions by 15% by 2020. Latest figures show transport as a whole produces 27% of the UK’s greenhouse gases – the largest amount of any industrial sector.

The Government’s ‘Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation’ (RTFO) regulates the use of bio fuels by the transport industry. BioLNG is recognised as an RTFO approved fuel and allows the reporting of its CO2 savings by fleet operators using it.

Chris Hampton, LNG Product Manager for BOC says “This is an exciting development in our journey to decarbonise transport. Hauliers now have the ability to save money and dramatically reduce their carbon footprint, by using government approved BioLNG in their LNG vehicles.”

Vehicles will continue to be supplied with LNG in the usual way and an equal quantity of biomethane will be injected into the UK Gas Grid to balance the quantity used for vehicle refuelling.
